Critical Info

TV Guide summary: Hammer goes "down-under-cover" as Aussie used-car salesman Crocodile Ralph to catch the woman who married, then killed, six car dealers.

Ph episode rating on the Hammer scale (1 to 6 bullets): 3. The parody parade continued, this time with moderate success. Though Sledge was acting awkwardly like Crocodile Dundee half the time, he did manage to sneak in a few Hammer-esque moments.

Act One

Mayjoy is playing darts at a bar. When Hammer enters, Mayjoy asks how his aim is today. As everyone ducks, Sledge promptly blasts the bullseye. [gunshot 1] Hammer sits down to order two root beers for him and Doreau. On the TV is a tacky used car salesman, Cowboy Cody, in a live commercial. Hammer then wishes the salesman was dead, at which point the salesman collapses. The bar patrons, including Hammer, stand in amazement ("He can kill with his thoughts!")

At the used car lot where the salesman died, Hammer is still puzzled.

Hammer: I sure hope this wasn't my fault, Doreau, because... a mind is a terrible thing to waste somebody with. [29 KB WAV file] He wasn't even a criminal. All he did was sell cheaply-built lemons to unsuspecting people at loanshark interest rates. That's not against the law.

Hammer initially refuses to come into work, saying to Doreau that he is too dangerous. When he finally rolls in, Doreau tries to show him that car dealers die all the time. From the computer, she learns that five other car salesmen died within 48 hours of their wedding. Worse yet, the widows were named Betty Jo, Bobby Jo, Mary Jo, Sally Jo, and Debbie Jo. Doreau becomes suspicious and suggests that she and Hammer find out why the honeymoons were so short.

At the microfilm library, Doreau finds from wedding pictures in old newspapers that the widows look like the same person. When Trunk hears of this, he says that it is a matter for the FBI since it's an inter-state crime. Hammer objects:

Hammer: Cowboy Cody was killed in my city by the most despicable, devious kind vermin that exists -- the wife. And I'm going to stop her before she marries again.
Doreau: You mean "kills".
Hammer: There's no difference.

Act Two

At the precinct, Hammer learns from the coroner that while Cowboy Cody was poisoned, there are no signs of any foreign substance being injected or ingested. Reading from a toxicology book, Doreau informs Hammer that an untracable poison could have been absorbed through the skin. Hammer gets a sudden inspiration that he should pose as a car dealer to lure the killer.

Hammer then goes to Cowboy Cody's lot as Crocodile Bruce, the biggest car dealer in Austrailia. Looking to buy the entire lot, he learns from another salesman that Mrs. Cody, who now owns the lot, is in mourning and will leave town day after tomorrow.

Prop gag: Hammer has grenades in his spice rack at home.

At his apartment, Hammer receives a call from Mrs. Cody. They agree to discuss business at a hotel at 8.

At the hotel, Hammer meets Mrs. Cody, as Doreau listens in on a microphone planted in Hammer's jacket.

[Mrs. Cody at the hotel]

After some smalltalk [gunshot 2], they proceed to her suite for "heavy bargaining."

As she gets closer to Hammer, she discusses their plans to be the "Jim and Tammy of the automotive world." Hammer suggests they get married, and she agrees. However, when she runs her fingers through his hair and pulls on it, she turns cold and orders him out.

[Mrs. Cody pulling on Sledge's hair]

Hammer: I haven't felt this bad since my boomerang wouldn't come back.

Back at the precinct, Hammer is trying to explain to Doreau why Mrs. Cody rejected him. Trunk then enters to inform Hammer and Doreau that Mrs. Cody has married a different car dealer, Billy Froman. Hammer's ego is obviously bruised.

[newspaper article of marriage]

Hammer: Look at his nose! He looks like an anteater!

After Hammer insults his toupee, Doreau receives a sudden inspiration. Recalling that Mrs. Cody got cold when she ran her fingers through Hammer's hair, Doreau notes that Cowboy Cody also wore a toupee. She then believes that these car dealers were poisoned through the toupee glue. Doreau and Hammer hurry to prevent another murder.

In their hotel suite, the newest husband is taking a shower. Mrs. Cody pours poison into his toupee glue, then applies the glue to the toupee. When he comes out of the shower, Hammer and Doreau barge in just as Mrs. Cody is about to place the toupee on his head.

Hammer: Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

Hammer stops Doreau just before she kicks down the door. After Hammer says his line, he only kicks a hole through the door, getting his leg stuck. He then must open the door and hop along on one leg.

[Hammer and Doreau pointing their guns]

After firing an opening shot, Hammer shoots the toupee five times. Doreau handcuffs Mrs. Cody.

[toupee shot out of Mrs. Cody's hands]

Doreau: You're going to get life for this.
Mrs. Cody: I'm not worried. I'm sure the jury will be very sympathetic.
Doreau: Oh yeah? How do you figure?
Mrs. Cody: Is it really a crime to rid the world of car dealers?
